Biking back to fitness!
We have known Neil here at Advance Rehab Centre since 2014 he first came to see us for outpatient rehabilitation following the stroke he suffered in 2013. At the time of his stroke Neil was working and active, a married father to 4 children.
Since first meeting Neil we have worked with him in intensive therapy blocks. He lives up in Newcastle and has the wonderful support of his family, his local Physio and more recently of regular support workers funded through the NDIS scheme.
In a recent review on Neil we were delighted to see the gains he has been making through the regular exercise and activities he is participating in with the help of his support workers and supportive family. A great example of some of the benefits the NDIS!
Neil has made a regular commitment to attending both the gym and using the local pool with his support workers and on other days of the week they head out together for a long walk or a long bike ride with support walker Josh on his push bike and Neil on his recumbent trike.
So far, the weekly bike rides are up to 32km and Neil just emailed this week to let us know he’s just shaved off another 18 minutes from his personal best!
He also walks a 4 and a half km route weekly with his support worker and through encouragement, regular practice and a bit of healthy competition, Neil has managed to reduce the time taken to do half of the current route from 90 minutes to just 29 minutes over the course of the last 18 months!
It’s Neils dedication and the great support he has that has allowed him to make such significant gains still years on from his stroke and we are so proud of him. Great work Neil and we look forward to seeing how you are going in another 12 months!
