Stroke Rehabilitation: Are you getting enough?

Recent studies show that on average people receive less than 60 minutes of rehabilitation a day in inpatient care following a stroke. Is this enough? We still don’t know exactly how much is enough, but we do know that people who receive more therapy, earlier, tend to have more positive outcomes and less dependency.

One solution to providing more therapy is to look more closely at delivery of stroke care services in the community. Comparatively inexpensive, and in some instances, better placed to facilitate early discharge from costly inpatient rehabilitation services, community stroke rehabilitation programs provide an alternative for patients with mild to moderate strokes.

People who live at home early post stroke generally need to do more for themselves and can be in ‘training’ the better part of twelve hours going about their daily activities. Rates of dependency, quality of life, readmission and overall service satisfaction have all shown reported improvements in an early supported discharge style program. In addition, the incidence of depression is reported to be lower in people receiving early supported discharge compared to those in traditional inpatient rehabilitation.

The Advance Rehab Centre Intensive Stroke Program offers up to five hours per day of formal and supervised rehabilitation, delivered in the community by a multidisciplinary team. This rehabilitation solution following stroke can be offered as an early supported discharge option as well as a ‘top up’ for those who have been living at home for a while.

If you or someone you know would benefit from intensive stroke therapy, delivered at home or at our centre, please consider our Intensive Stroke Program for its ability to provide early supported discharge, intensive therapy and a positive stroke rehabilitation opportunities.  For more info call the office or sign up for our e-news now at www.archealth.com.au
