APA Rural Smorgasbord

NSW APA Branch organises Smorgasbord events in regional areas. The forth and last Smorgasbord for 2011 will be held in Orange on Saturday 19 November 2011. This is part of the professional development programme offered through the Central West Regional Group of the APA NSW Branch. The format of the APA Smorgasbords is three, two hour presentations on one day that cover current hot topics, physiotherapy specialities, and emerging research. The Orange Smorgasbord has excellent speakers and topics chosen by their respective APA Regional Group to meet their local needs and also provides a great opportunity to network with local colleagues and make new acquaintances.

Participants can register for one, two or all three sessions on offer as each is individually priced. Non-APA members can attend, but pay significantly higher fees. This event is supported by HESTA and the Orange City Council.

Strength Training in Neurology

This one day lecture-based course will update Physiotherapists on the physiology behind strength training and the evidence for progressive resistance exercise and electrical stimulation in people with neurological conditions.The course will provide strategies for applying this evidence into clinical practice. Speakers will include Dr Alison Harmer, Dr Jo Glinsky, Prof. Nick Taylor, Prof. Roberta Shepherd and Dr Natalie Allen.

Improving upper limb motor recovery following stroke

This course is designed to provide practitioners with instructions in the Saebo Arm Training Program in conjunction with Saebo's Functional Dynamic orthoses, the SaeboStretch resting hand splint and our gross motor equipment. LSVT BIG & LOUD EVENING LECTURE

LSVT® therapies are designed specifically to enhance speech production (LOUD) and motor coordination (BIG) in individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

The LSVT® LOUD program itself is an intensive voice treatment program based on motor learning theory and is given in 16 sessions in one month. Homework consists of intensive practicing outside the clinical setting – once a day on clinic days and twice a day otherwise. The LSVT® BIG program applies the principles and approach of LSVT® LOUD to improving major motor skills, to improve things like gait, limb movement, and balance. The success of the program has been phenomenal and both LSVT® BIG and LSVT® LOUD are now offered by certified therapists at Advance Rehab Centre.

On May 3rd we are runninng an evening education session. The session is aimed to education people who have Parkinson's Disease as well as health professionals on the benefits and features of the LSVT programs. There is disabled parking available on-site and light refreshments will be served. RSVP is essential by the 2nd May. Japanese Physiotherapy Conference

Earlier this month we welcomed 10 Japanese physio lecturers and students to the centre. Over three days we hosted sessions on topics such as Physiotherapy in Australia, neurological rehab, hydrotherapy, sports injury management and Clinical Pilates. The conference was a huge success and we look forward to our Japanese counterparts returning in the future!
