Making phone calls, checking emails and using the internet are everyday activities which happen at our fingers tips. But what happens if you have an injury or illness which affects your ability to use technology?

Peter Coleman joined us with a history of polio with very poor balance and mobility on assessment. Peter was not keen on exercise and a reluctant participant. After the first two sessions of hydrotherapy however Peter was hooked and we could hardly get him out of the pool! Following an eight week course of hydrotherapy and progressing to gym training, all of Peter’s initial balance and mobility measures have improved significantly as well as his confidence- enough for him to stride around indoors again on a single crutch. Despite your hungry appetite for ‘a rest’ you have outdone yourself Peter!!

The practice of yoga is thousands of years old, however the real health benefits of yoga are only now being uncovered with recent research studies supporting the regular practice of yoga for the improvement of several medical conditions including post polio syndrome, multiple sclerosis & stroke. Regular yoga practice has been found to reduce the release of stress hormones in the body. Stress hormones have very significant physiological affects on the body often impacting on sleeping patterns, energy levels and healing time.

Inspired to see what is available in the private neurological sector down in Melbourne, I headed down for a sticky beak of three fantastic neurological facilities. First stop was to vist Darren & Shehan Pereira's practice, Neuromuscular Orthotics located in Mt Waverley, then on to visit Sue Vincent at Neuro Rehab just up the road and finally over to Elsternwick Private Hospital to chat with Beth Kirkwood about the Movement Disorder's clinic.
Overall, it was a very insightful trip and wonderful opportunity to meet other practitioners who are also passionate about providing quality neurological services and to see what they are doing and also to re-affirm what we are doing in Sydney!
