Although HSP, also known as Familial Spastic Paraplegia (FSP), is very rare it presents with common symptoms of spasticity, loss of sensation and weakness, especially in the lower legs. This can lead to difficulties with walking and balancing. At the cellular level there is a breakdown in the transportation channels in the nerves which can be especially evident in the longer nerves of the legs. It can also effect some of the smaller nerves in the brain that affect thinking, hearing, vision and can occasionally cause epilepsy.

The Geelong Osteoporosis Study which was released today has stunned experts by showing that nearly a third of all Australian adults have brittle bones which puts them at risk of fractures, frailty and declining health. It is estimated that there are now over 1.2 million Australians aged over 18 years old with the condition, this is much more than first thought.

Did you see the two Alfs in the North Shore Times last week? 98 years young last week, and Alf Fitzsimmons is a shining example of what a bit of effort, a positive outlook and continuous exercise can do. Advance Rehab Centre has over 60 clients older than 95 who come to the centre in St Leonards for a range of services including falls and balance classes and hydrotherapy classes, or who are seen at home by a physiotherapy and occupational therapy team.

68-year-old Vicky, who has a left visual field deficit as a result of a stroke, has regained her confidence in independent mobility and has returned to most of her everyday activities, except for driving. Guide Dogs instructors assessed Vicky in hospital, where they began a program to train her in systematic scanning strategies to encourage her to turn her head and eyes to the affected side. At home, Vicky was trained to use an ID cane for road crossings and public transport. She received help with money handling, and was referred for alternative reading materials such as talking books. “Our neurological orientation and mobility training program can help people like Vicky overcome vision problems that can have quite a big impact on their confidence and livelihoods,” Ms Fagan said
