Scientists have identified a matched set of molecules in the brain that when eliminated aided recovery from stroke, even days after the event. These molecules typically help to regulate the brain’s capacity for forming, strengthening, weakening and eliminating connections between nerve cells. To learn new skills and maintain neural pathways the brain needs these connections to be constantly strengthened, or in the case of those that produce less desirable outcomes, weakened.

Gentamicin is an antibiotic drug used to treat certain types of bacterial infections. It is widely known in the medical community that Gentamicin can cause impairments in the vestibular operating system leading to problems with balance. Recent media reports have referred to a recent study supporting evidence to show that this drug can cause permanent loss of balance, even after one dose.

The Geelong Osteoporosis Study which was released today has stunned experts by showing that nearly a third of all Australian adults have brittle bones which puts them at risk of fractures, frailty and declining health. It is estimated that there are now over 1.2 million Australians aged over 18 years old with the condition, this is much more than first thought.

Advance Rehab Centre has over 60 clients older than 95 who come to the centre in St Leonards for a range of services including falls and balance classes and hydrotherapy classes, or who are seen at home by a physiotherapy and occupational therapy team.
